Embassy of Sri Lanka in Beijing Celebrates the 77th Independence Day
The 77th National Independence Day of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka was celebrated at the Embassy of Sri Lanka in Beijing, People’s Republic of China, on the 4th of February 2025, with the participation of the members of the Sri Lankan community, officers of the Sri Lankan armed forces, students from Beijing and the provinces, Embassy officials and their families.
The Independence Day ceremony commenced with the hoisting of the National Flag by Ambassador Majintha Jayesinghe, followed by the singing of the National Anthem. A moment of solemnity ensued as the traditional oil lamp was lit, and two minutes of silence was observed to honour the heroes who sacrificed their lives for the freedom, peace, and prosperity of the motherland.
The Most Venerable Zong Zhi Thero, Vice Chief Incumbent of Linguang Temple; Reverend Imam Ma Hi Jun and Reverend Imam Ma Jia of the Beijing Islamic Association; and Reverend Father Simon Zhujie of the Archdiocese of Beijing conducted the Buddhist, Islamic, and Christian religious observances, respectively. Meanwhile, Reverend Brahmani Kurukkal of the Sri Bhadrakali Hanuman Kovil delivered blessings virtually. All religious dignitaries bestowed blessings upon Sri Lanka and its people.
The National Independence Day messages of President Anura Kumara Disanayaka, Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment, and Tourism, Vijitha Herath were read in Sinhala, Tamil and English languages during the celebrations.
Addressing the gathering, Ambassador Majintha Jayesinghe highlighted the significance of the 4th of February which marks Sri Lanka’s achievement of sovereign independence and said that the joy and pride evoked by this historic event seventy-seven years ago inspires courage and confidence among Sri Lankans, strengthening their collective resolve to work towards the progress of the motherland.
The event concluded with the guests being invited to enjoy traditional Sri Lankan cuisine.
