The Sri Lankan Community gather in large numbers at the Embassy of Sri Lanka in Beijing to Celebrate the Sinhala and Tamil New Year 2024
2024-04-08The Embassy of Sri Lanka in Beijing, together with the Sri Lanka - China Economic, Education and Cultural Association (SCEECA) and the members of the Sri Lankan community organized a colourful event to celebrate the Sinhala and Tamil New Year at the Embassy premises on 06th April 2024.
In keeping with the New Year traditions, the celebrations began with the lighting of the hearth to boil milk, followed by the lighting of the traditional oil lamp.
Delivering the welcome remarks, Charge d’Affaires a.i. K.K. Yoganaadan underscored the importance of coming together as Sri Lankans to celebrate this important cultural event and how it underscores the cultural diversity of Sri Lanka. Most Ven. Malwane Chandrarathana Thero, Senior Lecture of Beijing Foreign Affairs University invoked blessings upon those gathered at the event and on Sri Lanka. Minister Poornima Gunasekera highlighted the significance and the history of the Sinhala and Tamil New Year celebrations in Sri Lanka.
The official program was followed by traditional games and cultural performances. The participants were served Sri Lankan sweetmeats and a sumptuous Sri Lankan buffet lunch.
Sri Lanka China Economic Educational and Cultural Association (SCEECA) and the members of the Sri Lankan community in China extended their fullest support in successfully organizing the New Year Event. The Chinese students of the department of Sinhala languages in the Beijing Foreign Studies University (BFSU) made this event an opportunity to immerse in the Sri Lankan culture.
