The former President of China, Jiang Zemin will be long remembered2022-12-01
The Embassy of Sri Lanka to China is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of the former President of China, Jiang Zemin. He was an outstanding leader of China and enjoyed the sincere love and respect of his people.
As a committed leader and a significant influence on the guiding policy of socialism with Chinese characteristics, which has brought much material benefit to China, he will be long remembered by the Chinese people and their global friends.
In September 1980, former President Jiang led a delegation on a 5-day visit to Sri Lanka to study the Greater Colombo Economic Commission (GCEC). Subsequently, China examined President Jayewardene’s economic liberalization model as a case study before launching Shenzhen in the same year. The former President was a young engineer and a Vice Minister of China when he visited Sri Lanka.
The subsequent opening up of the Chinese economy produced spectacular results and propelled China into the modern age.
He was at the centre of the CPC's third generation of central collective leadership and the principal founder of the Theory of Three Represents. He was instrumental in directing China's WTO accession endeavour.
The Ambassador of Sri Lanka to China, Dr. Palitha Kohona, called on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China today (12/01), and signed the Book of Condolences along with many Heads of Mission.
We express our heartfelt condolences to the Government and the people of China during this time of loss and sorrow.
